Jesus and the Disinherited
Jesus – An Interpretation
Thurman writes that as humans, we are drawn to share with others what we have personally found meaningful. Christianity elevates this inclination into an imperative. In Christianity, we become morally obligated to share our beliefs. Our natural inclination to share becomes a responsibility to share the good news of Jesus Christ. We fail morally if we don’t convince others to share in our beliefs.
Consider the Great Commission in Matthew 28. Following his death, Jesus comes to his disciples and tells them to baptize all nations and teach them to obey his commands.
Thurman warns us that when our desire to share turns into a missionary endeavor, we risk becoming self-righteous. We risk objectifying others rather than seeing them as sisters and brothers.
